HEMA
HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts. In training we study fencing from old manuals: we break down techniques, practise them with partners, and use them in practice bouts. We use training weapons and protective equipment.
Between training sessions we talk and joke in the club’s permanent chat. We also hold joint events from time to time.
About HEMAA sabre is controlled with one hand. The wrist and fingers guide the blade, while steps and lunges help you move into striking distance and get away from the response.
Many drills follow an “attack — defence — response” exchange. For example, a partner makes a set strike, you stop it with your blade and respond. You then learn to choose the moment: initiate the attack or wait for your partner to act.
A longsword is held in two hands. Both hands guide and turn the sword, and their movement must coordinate with the body and steps. We practise passing steps, where the rear foot becomes the front foot, and moving to the side of an attack.
Blade contact is a separate part of the work. You learn to feel where the opponent is pressing, change your sword’s position, and open a path for a strike while staying covered against the response. We first study this in set drills, then use it in practice bouts.
HOW TO START
Choose sabre or longsword and send a request. Your first session in each discipline is free.
Choose a discipline and leave your contact. We will message you and arrange your first session.
The coach explains the rules and shows stance, grip, basic footwork, and your first strike.
One person performs a set attack; the other defends and responds. Then you swap roles. The coach helps correct mistakes.
Once you know the basics, you can apply techniques in a practice bout. The coach decides when you are ready; sparring uses protective gear.
